We fly wave near the main range of the Andes, the few runways are very important as outlanding possibility.  During a visit to Domuyo's National Park, we visited the Las Ovejas aerodrome, not sure why in such a small town they built in the past this airfield.  It's still landable, even for big gliders like the Nimbus 4.

Rio Neuquen e o tempo mudando

Saturday flight

After making a new base for the camera support, I  headed to ChosMalal’s aerodrome.  A new challenge, do everything without any ground help, since nearly everyone left.  Cholo went to General Roca, to deliver the club’s two-seater IS28  and will be back tonight, he will be TO’s crew for the remainder of this trip. Here we need help for everything, due to the constant strong winds, cold, batteries, oxygen, etc etc

A nice lenticular cloud this morning showed wave that should not exist according to the wind forecast.  Until I take off at 11:00 it was gone , but excellent thermals of 5m/s gave a strong initial enthusiasm for the flight. Went to the desert (east) as the clouds showed good thermals and a new landscape is always welcome vs. the main Andes Valley.  Till Los Barreales lake the day was strong and good, but than there was very blue sky,  I decided to head to Zapala / San Martin, after a few km I decided to return home, as the storms in the main valley of the Andes were growing fast.

Returnin was a little difficult although the 20km/h South wind helped, part of the sky energy was in shade or  going to the storms that raged. I was surprised at how fast the weather changed,  in Brazil's tropical and humid weather I know the meteorological cycle of the fronts and isolated rains, Cumulus Nimbus, etc.. But here, with temperate climate, high mountains, everything is different. I became tense because in several places the cloudbase lowered more than I was comfortable with.  Rainfall was snow, as  cloud the base was at 3000m, zero degrees Celsius.  No rain touched down, virga ?. Mountains certainly will have more snow tomorrow, as the clouds just leaned on them. This region is very dry, and it rains usually from May (June / July). For the first time I got snow in flight, without entering a cloud, snow even drizzled in was very strong, but enough to see in the plexi of the glider, was cold and did not melt.

I confess I was a little worried during this flight especially with the cloud bases dropping. But there was always nice sunshine on the east side, and also in areas of the Cordillera. This day served as a weather learning process.  The weather did not deteriorate completely, even after landing, I saw several sunny areas.

The glider must be taken care of, I have a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin, I believe there is a leak (again!) in the left wing tank, I was nauseated by the smell of Super Fangio (automotive gasoline, high octane). Also the wheel brake has a loud  noise, the drum brake might need replacement of the …… (forgot the English name).  Let’s hope for the weather to improve , wave please !!!

Yesterday a small 500k flight, initially thermals, but wave at Cordilhera del Viento, talked with Klaus Ohlmannm flying a bit to the south (Lajas), only thermic.  Flew between 4000 and 6000m++, FL195 is the maximum authorized this year by Ezeiza Control.  Nobody believed in wave, but the lenticular clouds were well formed in the afternoon, concetrated at CDV.  Thermals were not so well marked, it was sort of late, decided not to go far away.

Hector aluno do Cholo no IS28 fez uns pequenos clipes do DG, interessantes.

Termica na Cordilheira el Viento

Small Video at the edge of the CDV shows Domuyo Volcano at the top part of the screen

DOMUYO STRIKES BACK

ENGLISH

Day looked good, but as it was like the first day after coming back to Chosmalal, it took me 1:30h to get into the glider, preparing all the details, now without the helpful crew that stayed back in Brazil.

The Work trimming the edge of the egine exhaust worked well, now everything was ok with the glider.  The wind was strong on the ground, 20-30kts and the Nimbus 3DM had already taken off, but failed to reach the wave (off the engine too soon), and Cholo with the IS28, had to leave the rope at 2000m, because of the turbulence, could not stay behind the tug plan, he landed soon after.

When I started to taxi to the runway, Custódio (the aerodrome's boss) told me that the Governor's Jet Plane had taken off from Neuquen (the capital) with landing expected in 20minutes. Gave me just the time to take off when I heard them on the radio.

It took me less than 100m to take off, like a lift but the GS was slow.  Engine off at 3000m shortly after the city of Chos Malal, 1200m lost quickly, and relighted the engine again, climbed a little, and soon after I contacted the rotors them up a bit and soon I was climbing smoothly to 6000m in wave. I decided to go north, because there were some beautiful lenticular clouds, vs. south that showed only rotor clouds. As usual I was a little low in Domuyo, not mastering to fly behind this volcano.  Panic button on at 5000m, went tailwind  50-70km/h to leave the high mountains surrounding the volcano, caught the wave again and back to a safe altitude.  Off to Malargue, 220km to the north, I flew smoothly between 5000 and 6500m with good demarcation of the wave clouds.

North of Malargue started to dry up everything again, there were no more clouds for guidance, I decided to go back to the south, flying high until I reached the Volcano Domuyo, again I quickly went below my safe altitude, less than 4000m, could not climb on the rotors near the big volcano, so back to the East, with a strong tailwind arriving near Barrancas (my outlanding spot) less than 3000m (which is ver low to this area), I contacted some rotors and wave again.

Again near the Tromen volcano, which lies close to Chosmalal, a beautiful lenticular raised everything.  I flew a little side by side with the IS28, Hector (from Canaries) and Cholo giving instruction, took some pictures, and 15:00 had to land due to ...physiological issues. A pity, because the day got better by the hour.

I flew a little over 600km, but an Englishman flew 1,400 km from Bariloche, and Ohlmann took off the 14 and still made a 1200km ride !
